We start with a pot of water and we heat it until it begins to boil. This boiling water will represent our lives, or the trials and hard things that we have to go through. Now we take both a carrot and an egg and put them both into this pot. The carrot and the egg represent us, or our hearts. Now we leave both of these in the water for 20 minutes or so. As we take them out, we notice that both have changed after what they have gone through and experienced. The egg has become solid and hard, whereas the carrot has been softened by what it has gone through. The egg and the carrot, they are objects, they didn't have a choice as to what their circumstances would be or how they would react. But you and me, we are agents. We may not be able to choose the things that we go through in life, but we are able to choose how we will react! We can choose to become hard and closed off, or we can become soft, humbled and loving. So, my friends, what do you choose? Will you be a carrot or an egg?
And because everyone learns differently, here are a few more examples of this same situation. One from the Book of Mormon:
But behold, because of the exceedingly great length of the war between the Nephites and the Lamanites many had become hardened, because of the exceedingly great length of the war; and many were softened because of their afflictions, insomuch that they did humble themselves before God, even in the depth of humility.
