Pride and humility have been on my mind a lot recently. I heard a definition of humility a while ago that I really like. They said: "humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking less about yourself." It is interesting to see those people that think only of what they want and what they need, they are almost never satisfied or happy. And then there are the people that forget themselves in the service of others. No matter how little they have, it is enough. It makes me think of one of Christ's teachings as he was teaching a multitude during his Sermon on the Mount.
"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men." (Matthew 5:13)
What is the function of using salt when cooking? You use it to enhance the flavors of the other foods. When too much is put in, it takes all the attention for itself, is overpowering and doesn't really taste that good. But when a little is used, it puts the other flavors in the spotlight and helps them shine!
Am I over salting the earth and trying to outshine those around me? Or am I lifting, encouraging and helping them shine?
